Website
Our new Tau Zeta website will be up and running within the next month. It is looking great and will be a great addition to keeping in touch with the house. When it is released I will let you know the domain address.
Greek Centennial
The 100th Anniversary of Greek Life at WSU is fast approaching and this is very exciting because it is a great chance to make a trip to Pullman and celebrate 100 years of Greek life. The week for the Centennial celebration is scheduled for the week of September 14-20, 2009. The University has something planned for everyday and all alumni are always welcome at the house anytime. The house has one scheduled event that week and it will be Sunday the 20th. I have tentatively planned a brunch that morning at 10 o’ clock. This will be based upon the amount of people that we are expecting. There is a football game on Saturday and you can easily buy tickets through the University. The website that has all the available information is http://www.wsu.edu/Greek/GreekCentennial/GreekCentennialMain.html. If you are planning on coming to any of these events please RSVP as soon as possible so that I can organize all of the activities.
Homecoming 2009
The dates for Homecoming Weekend are October 9-11, 2009. We are playing ASU on Saturday and the time is TBA. I am reluctant to plan another BBQ but this seems to be the only option for before the game. So there will be a BBQ at 11 o’clock on October 10th. This is not too far after the Greek Centennial but they are both great opportunities to make it back to Tau Zeta. More details will be coming out over the summer about Homecoming. If you can’t make it to the BBQ please stop by the house anytime. If you are planning on making a trip back for Homecoming please RSVP soon.
Golf Tournament
There is an Alumni golf Tournament planned thanks to Dietrich Miklautsch (Tau 1580) and Ryan Halvorson (Tau 1583). The tournament will be held at Lake Wilderness Golf Club in Maple Valley June 13th, 2009 with tee times beginning at 9:30 am. The cost will be $70 and this includes 18 holes, cart, lunch, and a portion to the house. This money will go towards new kitchen tables and chairs and any extra going towards the entry way and front porch. If we get 30 players then that will cover the cost of new kitchen tables and chairs. There will be current members there in the tournament which will be very nice. If you are interested please send a check by May 10th to:
Dietrich Miklautsch
500 Aloha St. C-2
Seattle, WA 98109
I want to thank Dietrich and Ryan for coordinating this! Hopefully I will get to meet all of you there.
Facebook Group
We have now with the help of Lee Whittles created a Facebook Group exclusively for alumni. The group is called “Washington State Lambda Chi’s”. You can just search for that and then request to join the group. This is a great way to stay in touch and post photos and such to reconnect with the past years at Tau Zeta.
Survivor Man and Anchorman
In the past month we have gone 2 for 2 in sorority philanthropies. First we won Alpha Chi Omega’s Survivor Man Competition which raised money and awareness for Domestic Violence. We swept every competition during the week which included: relay race, eating competition, best chest in the west, pop tabs (30,000+), and serenade. Each one of these we claimed victory by a sizable margin. The second victory for Tau Zeta was Delta Gamma’s Anchorman Competition. This was a man pageant and we sent Trevor Sodorff (Tau 1704) to compete. He had to perform a talent (guitar), Q&A, and swimsuit modeling. He won the pageant and is now DG’s Anchorman for the year (this was a lifelong dream).
Graduating Senior
Austin Cattle (Δ1693Π) will be graduating on May 9th with a BA in Business Administration- Entrepreneurship. He came to WSU in 2005 and quickly joined Lambda Chi Alpha as a legacy (Peter Cattle Δ1067Π), where he is proud to say that he has lived in for all four years. During this time, Austin has been very involved with the Fraternity and has held numerous officer positions including Risk Manager, Scholarship Chair, and Vice President. He is also proud to be leaving the Chapter in a great position for success, and looks forward to visiting the Chapter in the coming years.
Austin will also commission as a Second Lieutenant into the United States Army on the 8th of May. He has accomplished this through ROTC which he has been a member of also since his freshman year. He is a Distinguished Military Graduate and branched Infantry which is one of the most difficult branches to obtain as a ROTC cadet. He will go through about a year of training which will include the Basic Officer Leader Course, Infantry Basic Officer Leader Course, Airborne School, Ranger School and any other specialty schools he needs or can attend. He is tentatively assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division (the All-Americans) in North Carolina, but may be reassigned upon completion of training.
A Note from Alum Dick Hanner
Well I hesitated to write and send anything but here goes. I pledged the LCA house in the Fall of 1955 and was initiated in the Fall of 1956. My grades were too low the first semester so that is why I was initiated later. That year I was elected pledge trainer and we had a great bunch of pledges that year. They were an easy group to work with, Dave Gunderson, Len Hudson (became WSU Student Body President) and Doug Myhre to mention a few.
After three years of college I wanted to quit and told my mother. She said, "YOU WILL NOT QUIT." So I continued for one more year in business administration. But my grades were still low and then I was drafted into the Army and sent to West Germany for two years. I returned to WSU in the Fall of 1961 and graduated in 1962 in General Studies with an emphasis on education. My years of living at the fraternity and then later living in an apartment and eating at the house were good years. The fraternity had a staying power for me as I got to know a lot of good guys who were very supportive.
In 1963 I graduated from Western Washington in education and starting teaching that Fall in Arlington Junior High. After three years I accepted an elementary teaching position on Mercer Island in 1966. Thirty four years later I retired and drove a school bus for the Mercer Island School District for two years. Then I was called back into part time teaching (K-1 PE) for the last 10 years. This spring I will finally fully retire.
